What Me Worry?

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - President Bush opened a long weekend of golf and fishing Friday by hooking his first drive into a riverbank. He found his stroke on his second try, cheered by his father, who proclaimed it a "good ball!"

Arriving at the family's oceanside estate, Bush quickly shed the suit and tie for running shorts, a white T-shirt and sneakers. Using a tennis racket, he whacked an orange ball for dog Spot to fetch and was still clutching the racket when he boarded a Segway, a standup, motorized scooter that resembles a push lawnmower.

The Segway went down on Bush's first attempt, but he stayed on his feet with a flying leap over the machine. Undeterred, he got on again. His father climbed on a second Segway and they cruised around the driveway at the estate at Walker's Point.

Ok, anyone know anything about the Segway? Much like a motorcycle, you do need both hands to operate it. (This is one of the reasons the US Postal Service did not find positive results when testing it for their mail carriers, since it tied up the hand the mailman uses to sort the mail while pushing his cart with the other.) So jumping on with a tennis racket in your hand and trying to operate this thing is simply ill fated from the start. Is it just me or are there other people out there who occasionally experience secret moments of terror when our president exhibits some outward signs of a very low IQ by some of the things he says or does? I know I tend to be cynical about everything in general, but there do seem to be countless examples of this. Someone I work with has a day calendar that has one actual quote per day from George W. - each of them more ridiculous than the next.

"The reason we start a war is to fight a war, win a war, thereby causing no more war." - 10.3.2000

"So when your teachers say read, you ought to listen to her." - 2.8.2001

"I don't know whether I'm going to win or not. I think I am. I do know I'm ready for the job. And if not, that's just the way it goes." - 8.21.2000

"They want the federal government controlling Social Security like it's some kind of federal program." - 11.2.2000

Don't get me wrong, I am not affiliated with any political party, nor do I make it a point to bash our president. Further, I was moved to tears by the speech he gave to the nation after 9/11 and I have felt some level of comfort in the knowledge that we certainly do not have some wimpy character as the commander and chief of the nation. But I've got to admit, my confidence has been eroding in the logic used in his decision making processes. For the first time in the history of this nation, he attacked a country without being provoked in any way. There was never any tie between Iraq and the events on 9/11 established and furthermore the claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and presented a direct threat to the US looks more embarrassing with each passing day. The only reason the whole thing has gone over the way it has is that it is basically impossible to feel sorry for a jackass like Sadaam. But I do feel sorry for the people of Iraq. This war hasn't really helped them very much at all. Before you pounce on me, please know that I have nothing but respect for those in the US armed forces who performed in the most exemplary fashion and truly showed the US military as a group other countries really won't wanna mess with. I love this country and I'm proud to be an American. Funny that I feel the need to point that out, but saying anything not 100% supportive to our government these days seems to mean you're a traitor to some people.

That said, it is nice to know the Prez is getting some relaxation in for himself. God knows, I wouldn't want his job for any amount of money. And seeing that it appears that his "Roadmap for Peace" idea is going to get used as toilet paper in the Middle East, given recent developments there, he's going to need it.

I have never replied to anyone before, but this time I am compelled to. You write very well. It is very effective to mix a little praise in with your criticism. First of all, if reporters followed anyone around, and hung on every word, everyone would have a list of ridiculous quotes. To doubt the mans intelligence after everything he has accomplished is idiotic. They didn't find all the bodies buried under the World's Trade Center either. Do you think they don't exist either? You try finding something in all that sand. I hope you are intelligent enough to realize that maybe; just maybe, the President was privy to slightly more information than you about what Sadaam was doing. I hope you don't honestly think the people of Iraq are no better off now. Have you forgotten the struggles we Americans have endured in order to enjoy our freedom. The Iraqi people will have to endure some hardship, but at least now the have a chance at Freedom. I do not think you are a traitor, but I find it interesting that you would be concerned that people may view you that way. By the way, I am a registered Democrat. I did not vote for Bush, nor am I likely to vote for him in the future. I do have to say, I respect the man, and he has shown nothing but class during his presidency, unlike his predecessor whom I did vote for.

PS: the pictures of Bush flying over that segway are pretty funny.

We still have to remind people of the evils of Hitler and his Nazis, it's amazing that people can't see what's right before their eyes, like GW and that lawn mower .... ;-)

I say this first and foremost, because, I'm VERY impressed with your writing, especially the insertion of sources, and most of all, TACTFUL, and fairly RESPECTFUL opposition of many of pres. bush's actions.
Funny, I wondered why that Segway never caught on! now I know! thanks for the info!
The sight of him falling off the thing is HYSTERICAL! and the quotes are VERY AMUSING!
    I think he's one of the worst-spoken presidents we've had. it's laughable.
However, I do think we differ on views of the war, especially two points:
    A) I think the people of Iraq are far better off, especially in the LONG term. The mass graves of bodies of all ages found a few weeks back are all I need to see to know that. Sure, many innocent unquestionable have died due to US/ally actions. But the torturous Saddam clan was nothing short of Hitler-esque.
    B) I'm TIRED of hearing about what an 'embarrassment' it is if the US finds no shiny new, fueled up nuclear bomb, ready to launch. a few weeks ago the mobile weapons labs which Colin Powell told us about were found BURIED in the desert! Why is it that more proof is needed to satisfy people? It has been said that these weapons labs could have had no other purpose than to create W's of MD.
well, thanks for the chance to speak my peace, and AGAIN, I'm very impressed with your well written, tactful post!

This is it, folks! -I don't dance!
