Shanghai
doctors have provided reconstructed penises for two men using a
new technique that can make the replacement bigger than the
original, the official Xinhua news agency said Monday.
Doctors at the Shanghai Number Nine People's Hospital performed
the procedure on a Chinese worker whose penis was amputated due
to a tumor, and on a Pakistani who lost his sexual organ in a
work accident. Both have since become fathers.
"We use skin and muscles from the patient's forearms, thighs and
stomach to rebuild the penis," said Cheng Kaixiang, a doctor
with the hospital's plastic surgery department.
"This can not only increase the diameter and length of the new
organ, but also repair all sense in nerve endings related to the
patient's sexual feelings, thus giving him a complete recovery,"
he said.
The new technique has been formally named after Cheng, whose
thesis on the procedure been published in leading international
plastic surgery magazines, Xinhua said.
