 Gov. Jesse Ventura Puts Foot in Mouth | | By: Phantom | Published: 03/06/1999 | | | |
| ST. PAUL, Minn. (Reuters)
Gov. Jesse Ventura
apologized Thursday for saying the
streets in
Minnesota's capital city, St. Paul, must have been laid out by a
band of drunken Irishmen.
The remark, made during an appearance earlier in the week on
"The Late Show with David Letterman,"
was a joke in keeping with the nature of the show, the one-time
pro wrestler told a news conference.
"If I offended anyone I apologize," he said. "It's a show of
comedy ... that's the light in which I did the
show, to go on there and have fun."
"The city of St. Paul is a
tremendous city," he added.
Ventura told Letterman that compared to neighboring Minneapolis,
where he grew up, "Whoever
designed the (St. Paul) streets must have been drunk. I think it
was those Irish guys. You know what they
like to do," he added, pretending to toss down a drink.
At Thursday's news conference, Ventura said his feeling about
St. Paul's streets went back to the days
when he wrestled at the city's Civic Center and, in trying to
beat the crowds out, invariably made a
wrong
turn in looking for the freeway.
His remark upset some Irish and Irish-American residents of St.
Paul. The City Council retaliated by
passing a resolution Wednesday saying the streets were designed
and named "to keep wrestlers and other
undesirables out...this plan is obviously not working."
